Amsler grid eye test
Check your central vision for early signs of macular degeneration, macular holes and macular swelling. Do it one eye at a time, in good light, wearing your reading glasses.
- Hold your phone or stand back from the screen at normal reading distance (about 35 cm).
- Cover your left eye and look only at the black dot in the centre.
- While looking at the dot, notice whether all lines look straight and all squares look equal.
- Repeat with your right eye covered.
With either eye, did any lines look wavy, bent or blurred, or were any squares missing or dark?
This self-check does not replace an eye examination. If you have diabetes, high myopia or are over 50, have a dilated retina check every year anyway.
Frequently asked questions
What is an Amsler grid test?
A simple chart of straight lines with a dot in the centre. Looking at the dot with one eye at a time shows whether any lines look wavy, blurred or missing, which can be an early sign of macular degeneration, a macular hole or swelling at the macula.
How often should I do the Amsler grid test?
Once a week if you have macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, high myopia or a family history of AMD. Always test each eye separately.
Can the Amsler grid test diagnose macular degeneration?
No. It is a screening check only. If anything looks abnormal, book a retina examination with an OCT scan, which costs ₹1,000 at Spectra.
