What is it?
Blunt injuries from balls, fists or falls can cause bleeding inside the eye, a torn retina, a swollen macula, or a retinal detachment that appears weeks later. Sharp injuries and high-speed fragments (hammering metal, grinding, firecrackers) can enter the eye and lodge inside.
Retina surgeons treat the damage inside the eye: removing blood or foreign bodies by vitrectomy, repairing detachments and treating infection.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do right after an eye injury?
Do not rub or press the eye. Cover it loosely with a clean cup or shield and come the same day. For chemical splashes, wash the eye with clean water for 15 minutes first.
Can a retina problem appear weeks after an injury?
Yes. Tears and detachments can appear weeks later. Have a dilated retina check after any significant blow, and come back at once if flashes or a shadow appear.
