What is it?
The uvea is the middle layer of the eye (iris, ciliary body and choroid). Inflammation can be in the front (anterior uveitis), the middle (intermediate), the back (posterior, affecting retina and choroid), or all over (panuveitis).
In India, infections such as tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis and viruses are important causes, along with autoimmune diseases. Finding the cause matters, because steroids alone can make infections worse.
Symptoms
- Red, painful eye with light sensitivity (front uveitis)
- Floaters and blurred vision (back uveitis)
- Small pupil
- Recurrent episodes
Risk factors and causes
- Tuberculosis
- Toxoplasmosis
- Viral infections (herpes, CMV)
- Ankylosing spondylitis and HLA-B27 disease
- Sarcoidosis
- Behçet's disease, VKH
- Often no cause is found
A red painful eye with light sensitivity, or sudden floaters with blurred vision, needs a check within 1 to 2 days.
