What is it?
RP runs in families, and in India it is more common where marriages between relatives are frequent. It usually starts in childhood or the teenage years with difficulty seeing in dim light, then side vision narrows over many years.
A retina specialist confirms it with examination, OCT and an electroretinogram (ERG), a test of how the retina responds to light.
Symptoms
- Night blindness
- Bumping into things at the sides
- Tunnel vision later on
- Glare and slow adjustment to darkness
Risk factors and causes
- Inherited (genetic)
- Family history of night blindness
- Parents who are related
Not an emergency. Book a retina check for any child or adult with night blindness.

Frequently asked questions
Is retinitis pigmentosa curable?
Not yet. One gene therapy is approved abroad for a specific gene. Research is active, and complications such as cataract and macular swelling can be treated now.
Will my children get RP?
It depends on how it is inherited in your family. Genetic counselling can tell you the chances.
