What is it?
When a vein is blocked, blood backs up and leaks into the retina, causing bleeding and swelling. A blocked main vein is a central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO); a blocked branch is a branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).
It is a warning sign for the whole body: high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and, in younger people, blood disorders are often found. Your physician should check these too.
