What is it?
Fluorescein dye travels through the body in seconds and lights up the retina's blood vessels under blue light. Leaks, closed areas and abnormal new vessels show clearly, which helps plan laser and injections.
It is commonly used in diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusions, wet AMD, CSR and uveitis.
Why FFA is done
- Diabetic retinopathy: to find closed areas and new vessels
- Wet AMD and CSR: to find the leak
- Vein occlusion
- Retinal vasculitis and uveitis
How the test is done
- Before
Eat lightly. Tell the team about allergies, asthma, kidney disease or pregnancy. Bring someone with you.
- Test
Pupils are dilated, the dye is injected into an arm vein, and photographs are taken over 5 to 10 minutes.
- After
Skin looks yellowish and urine turns bright yellow-orange for a day. This is normal. Drink plenty of water.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cost of an FFA test in Kolkata?
₹3,500 at Spectra Eye Hospital; ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 across Kolkata.
Is FFA safe?
Yes for most people. Mild nausea for a minute is common. Serious allergy is rare, and the team is trained and equipped to handle it.
FFA or OCT angiography?
OCT-A needs no dye and is quick, but sees a smaller area and does not show leakage. FFA is still preferred in many situations. Your doctor will choose.
