What is it?
As the eye grows longer, the retina is stretched like a balloon. Thin patches (lattice degeneration) and small holes can form in the periphery, and the macula can develop splits, holes or abnormal vessels.
Glasses, contact lenses or LASIK correct the focus but do not change this retinal risk, so checks continue for life.
