What is it?
After vitrectomy the eye is filled with gas, silicone oil or fluid. Gas and oil hold the retina in place while it heals, which is why positioning matters.
Positioning aids such as a massage-type face-down pillow or a table with a cushion make the first days much easier.
Do's and don'ts
- Keep the head position exactly as advised
- Use drops 4 to 6 times a day
- Wear the shield at night for a week
- No flying, hill travel or nitrous oxide anaesthesia while gas remains

Side positioning
For tears on one side.
No positioning
With silicone oil or some membrane surgery.
Recovery timeline
- Week 1
Rest, drops, positioning.
- Weeks 2 to 8
Gas shrinks; vision improves gradually.
- Months 3 to 6
Final vision; new glasses; oil removal if used.
